| Another Volleyball Honor for Marian - Rachel Charles named Gatorade Player of the Year for Michigan! - |
Bloomfield Hills – Marian High School Senior Rachel Charles was named 2009-10 Gatorade Michigan Volleyball Player of the Year by the Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Rachel as Michigan’s best high school volleyball player. She is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award, to be announced in late December.
The 5-foot-7 senior libero led the Mustangs to a 77-2 record and the Class A state championship this past season. A 2009 First Team All-State selection, Charles recorded 903 total digs, averaging 11.4 per match and also tallied 73 service aces. She reached double figures in digs in 40 of Marian High’s 79 matches, including 18 in the title-clinching match against Portage Central High on November 21.
Rachel has maintained a 3.56 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally as a bible school counselor and as a youth volleyball coach.
“What makes Charles unique is her instinctive defensive ability, which has helped us reach the state finals three years in a row,” said Marian High Head Coach Irick Gardner. “Without her, I don’t know that we would have had a chance to win our first state title.”
Rachel has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at Lehigh University beginning in the fall of 2010.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
Rachel is the first Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year award winnner in Marian's history. Congratulations to Rachel Charles, Coach Gardner and the whole Marian volleyball program on this marvelous achievement.

MARIAN SWIM/DIVE SURPRISES D-1 TEAMS IN STATE FINALS
“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight….It’s the size of the fight in the dog”,
This sums up the mighty Mustangs of Marian High School Swim/Dive Team who surprised everyone before the season by moving from D-3 to D-1, and finished just short of taking the state crown this year in D-1. Marian was back to back State Champions the past two years in D-3 and finished second place this year at the D-1 State meet in Holland. The girls exceeded all expectations as their team fought relentlessly against the perennial powerhouses of Ann Arbor Pioneer, Saline, Huron, Novi and West Ottawa. Marian has about 600 students, compared to the over 2000 students in D-1 schools, and it appeared they were all in the stands with arguably the loudest and most supportive of swim fans. With no school pool and only 31 swimmers/divers, it is amazing what this group of girls could accomplish. Saline ultimately prevailed with a great effort in the breast stroke which determined the final outcome in the second to last event.
Saline brought 18 of their very talented swimmers and divers to this state meet. Marian brought 12 swimmers and 2 divers.
Marian saw sophomore Jaynie Pulte take All-American honors with a new D1 record in the 50 free with a time of 23.53. The medley relay team of, Hayley Johnson (27.62), Claire Schelske (31.16), Jaynie Pulte (24.88), and Stephanie Berg (24.78), took second place and also attained all American status with a time of 1:48.44.
Individual All-State honors went to Jaynie Pulte 2nd place in the 100 Butterfly (57.06); Hayley Johnson 3rd (58.32) and senior Stephanie Berg, 4th place (58.97) in the 100 Back; and Claire Schelske 7th place in the 100 Breast (1:08.50); and to the 200 free relay team, (2nd place) of Stephanie Berg (25.14), Madison Taylor(25.59), Molly Schaefer (24.13), and Jaynie Pulte (23.30); and finally to the 400 free relay team (6th place) of Madison Taylor (55.76), captain Emily Evans(55.44), Molly Schaefer (53.44), and Hayley Johnson (53.44).
Other Marian swimmers earning points for the Mustangs include Molly Schaefer in the 200 Free (1:55.92) and the 100 Free (53.67); Claire Schelske in the 200IM (2:14.45); Emma Gaboury (346.70) in Diving; Stephanie Berg (54.01) and Hayley Johnson (54.75) in the 100 free; and Camille Lynch in the 100 Breast (1:09.54).
The Marian Mustangs are led by coach Bill Thompson, and diving coach Joe Guzzio. In addition to their accomplishments in the pool, the team also achieved the status as the first place 2009 Academic All State Team in D-3 this year.
Congratulations again to both coaches, the state swimmers and the whole swim and dive team and parents on such a great season and great spirit at the finals!!
