- -Try to anticipate the author's next move
-Look for answers to the basic questions: who what where, why, and how
-Ask yourself what information is important for what you are covering in your class
-Don't highlight masses of text (read and look back at what is the meat of what you just read and highlight that information.)
-Try to paraphrase and condense the information
-Consider how new material relates to information you already know

| General Test-Taking tips |
|
- 1. Whether or not you feel calm, approach the test calmly.
2. If you simply aren't calm, try to use your nerves to your benefit. Sometimes your adrenaline can make you much more aware so make use of it. 3. Scan the test. See what kind of questions are being asked. Which ones will get you the most points? 4. Read carefully the general directions and the directions for each question. 5. Don't spend too much time on the questions you don't know. Always give you best effort on the questions you know the best. 6. Check your time after you have answered each question to be sure you are moving at a good pace. If you spend too much time on a question you can lose sight of your timing. 7. Show your work especially in math. You may get partial credit even if the answer is wrong. Make a logical estimation of the answer for a math or science question. This should speed your problem-solving on a quicker pace.
If you are stuck: 1. Rephrase a question in your own words. If it is acceptable, raise your hand or go up to the teacher and ask for clarification of the question. 2. f you cannot remember something precisely give you best estimation or approximation of the answer. 3. If you are running out of time note that on your test in a note to your teacher and then outline some of the points you wanted to make to answer the question/s. 4. If you do need to leave some questions blank choose wisely. Be sure to fill in all answers that are worth the most points and answer the questions you know the most about. 5. If all else fails, shrug your shoulders, laugh ruefully at the injustice of it all, and move on..

- -Break the task into smaller parts.
-Tell other people what you're working on. It is more difficult to get away with procrastinating if others know what you have to do. Do first whatever portion of the work you are most reluctant to do. Reward yourself at the end of each task..

| Ten Tips for Taking a Standardized Exam |

- 1. Get plenty of sleep the night before the test.
2. If you feel nervous before beginning, try to relax by taking a few deep breaths. 3. Maintain confidence in your abilities and plan to do your best. Your attitude can affect your performance. 4. Listen carefully to all instructions and ask questions if you hear something you don't understand. 5. Focus your attention entirely on your work. 6. Position your answer sheet next to your test booklet so you can mark answers quickly and accurately. 7. Before answering each question, read it completely, as well as the possible responses. 8. When you are unsure of an answer, choose the one you think is best and go on to the next question. Be sure to answer every question. There is no penalty for guessing. 9. Pace yourself throughout the test by occasionally checking the time. 10. If you complete the test before your time is up, reread the questions and check your answers..
