Marian recently welcomed back alumnae Maria Mansour ’18 and Claire Fanning ’19, to speak with students in the Marian Medical Club about their educational journeys in medicine. Both Mansour and Fanning are currently studying at the University of Michigan and offered a wealth of knowledge on preparing for medical school, navigating the application process, and managing the challenges of undergrad life.
During their presentation, Mansour and Fanning emphasized the importance of preparation, stress management, and faith in their academic journeys. They also reflected on how their experiences at Marian have continued to shape their paths in higher education. Mansour shared how her faith helped her persevere through difficult times, recounting moments when she felt overwhelmed.
"I remember times when there was nothing else I could do, and I would give all of my worries to God and feel a sense of ease,” she reflected, encouraging students to rely on their faith during stressful periods. Fanning provided practical advice on applying to medical school, emphasizing the significance of building relationships with professors during undergrad.
"It’s important to introduce yourself to your professors and build a relationship while in undergrad,” Fanning advised. You will need letters of recommendation, and it's great to have a mentor.”
Both highlighted the value of extracurricular activities and volunteer work, noting how essential these experiences are for standing out in applications. “Admissions committees are looking for passionate candidates who stand out,” they explained, “so it’s important to get involved in activities that showcase your interests. Both alumnae also spoke about the comfort they found in their shared Marian sisterhood, which helped ease their fears when they first began their studies at the University of Michigan.
Their presentation left students inspired and informed, providing valuable insight into the medical field and the steps they can take to pursue similar paths. The event served as a reminder of the strength of the Marian community and how the bonds formed at Marian continue to support alumnae in all stages of life.
