Marian Wins Top Honors at Forensics Tournament

Eloquent public speaking is becoming a lost art, but not among a select group of students at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills. The Marian High School Forensic Team won thirteen awards at the season’s second Detroit Catholic Forensic League tournament held at Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights on Saturday, February 1. Several metro Detroit Catholic high schools competed in the tournament that featured competition in six public speaking and dramatic interpretation categories.

Five Marian students received special acclaim by winning first place in their competitive speaking category: Junior Isabella Mansour in original oratory for her speech, Everyone’s Superpower, Senior Margaux Etzel in the category of extemporaneous speech, Junior Catalina Colangelo van Meek for her dramatic performance of ¡Yo Soy Latina!, Sophomore Grace Gappy for her oral interpretation of Wintergirls and Dark Daughter, and the duo interpretation team of Quinn Hock and Alexandra Zimmermann for their performance of Steel Magnolias.

The Marian team also captured three second-place awards, two third-place awards, two fifth-place awards, and one sixth-place award. Junior Fernanda Segura, Freshman Gracelyn Riga, and Freshman Kaitlyn Merritt won second-place awards, Sophomore Gina Azar and Freshman Zellie Sarafa won third-place awards, Sophomore Mary Frangie and Freshman Madelyn Hasani won fifth-place awards, and Sophomore Kayden McKay won a sixth-place award.

Teacher and head forensics coach Brendan Sharp called the victory “a historic milestone in the development of the Marian forensics program.” Marian fielded the largest team in the league and the largest in the school’s history. Associate coach Rob Wroblewski stated,“It was great to see this outstanding group of talented students rewarded for their months of dedication and hard work.”

Marian’s next Detroit Catholic Forensic League tournament will be held at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School on Saturday, March 1.
