All-School Assembly Marks the Start of a New Year

Marian’s first all-school assembly brought the entire student body together to officially kick off the new year. The morning began with sophomores, juniors, and seniors lining the main corridor to clap in the freshman class before everyone headed into the auditorium. It was a sea of color with students wearing bright T-shirts representing one of Marian’s six Houses: Crown, Shield, Mary, Cross, Dove, and Flame. (Students remain in the same House throughout their four years at Marian, building connections across grade levels through traditions, service, and friendly competition.)

At the assembly, President Heather Greig Sofran ’96 introduced the theme for the 2026–27 school year, “Loved Beyond Measure, Known by Name,” and reflected on what it means for the Marian community. Although he couldn’t be there in person, new chaplain Father Karl Finkbeiner joined the assembly through a video message. He reflected on John 20:11–18, when the risen Jesus calls Mary Magdalene by name, a fitting connection to this year’s theme and its reminder to truly know and value one another.

Principal Stacey Cushman talked about Marian’s Profile of a Graduate and the qualities we hope each student develops during her years at Marian. She also introduced Uma, Marian’s therapy dog, a friendly and calming presence during the school day. Assistant Principal Christina Krogh then shared a few reminders about school policies and encouraged students to do their part in making the year a positive one.

The assembly also gave students a chance to get to know some of the many new faculty and staff joining Marian this year. Among the fun facts students learned: Mr. Liedel (math) keeps a stash of candy in his classroom, Ms. Ackerman (theology) is a major Harry Potter fan, Ms. Boersen (campus ministry) is always up for a trip to Aritzia, and Miss Boji (counseling) loves her coffee. Mr. Rolando (science and business) shared that he’s a fan of all things Disney, while Mr. Kullman (social studies) is a devoted Detroit sports fan!

Members of the All School Board wrapped up the assembly by leading students in the Marian fight song, giving the freshmen their first introduction to a tradition they’ll soon know by heart.
