From Marian to Berlin: Allie Bailey’s Career Bridge Journey

This summer, Allie Bailey ’26 was selected to participate in the Career Bridge program with the Goethe-Institut. The competitive program is open to U.S. high school students and offers a unique opportunity to strengthen German language skills while experiencing Germany’s dual apprenticeship system, which blends classroom learning with hands-on professional training.

Allie described the experience as “the most fun I’ve ever had.” She reflected, “I met so many amazing people, and it gave me the chance to explore the ins and outs of the program and learn about the education system in Germany. One lesson I took away from this experience is the importance of trying new things—you really have to put yourself out there, and it will all work out.”

That spirit of exploration is exactly what the Career Bridge program is designed to foster. Open to talented high school students across the United States, the program connects participants with Germany’s pathways into technical professions, engineering, and skilled trades. During their 12 days in Berlin, Allie and her peers visited companies, toured vocational schools, shadowed professionals, and gained firsthand insight into how Germany prepares young people for their careers. Cultural excursions and daily interactions with German students also helped participants strengthen their language skills in real-world settings.

Allie credits her Marian community—especially her German teacher, Frau Shopinski—for supporting her journey. “Mrs. Shopinski is super encouraging about anything I want to learn,” Allie said. “She really pushed me to apply for this program, and I’m so glad she did.”

Looking ahead, Allie hopes to continue improving her German fluency while pursuing a career in STEM. The program not only gave her valuable language practice but also broadened her vision for the future. “It was such a meaningful experience,” she explained. “It showed me how important it is to step outside of your comfort zone. That’s where you grow.”

At Marian, students are encouraged to seek opportunities that challenge them both academically and personally. Allie’s story reflects how Marian’s curriculum, combined with the dedication of its teachers, helps students build the confidence to succeed anywhere in the world.

Marian congratulates Allie on this incredible accomplishment and looks forward to seeing where her journey takes her next.
