Celebrating Marian Teacher of Excellence Mrs. Sarah Walley
Math teacher Mrs. Sarah Walley has been recognized as Marian's Archdiocese of Detroit Teacher of Excellence recipient.
Each year, the Archdiocese honors one educator from each school for excellence in teaching, dedication to the Catholic faith, and love for students. Mrs. Walley was selected in recognition of the meaningful impact she has already made during her first year at Marian.
Known for her patience, positivity, and commitment to helping students build “math confidence,” Mrs. Walley has quickly become a valued member of the Marian community. In her nomination, colleagues praised her ability to create a classroom environment where students feel supported, challenged, and empowered to grow.
“Students leave her classroom more confident, more capable, and more willing to take on challenges once intimidating to them,” says Marian counselor Meredith Morse. “She builds trust quickly and shows students she believes in them before they fully believe in themselves.”
Since joining Marian and relocating to Michigan this year, Mrs. Walley shared that the Marian community immediately felt like home, pointing to the everyday kindness and encouragement she witnesses among students.
"I feel incredibly blessed to have been welcomed into the Marian community this year," says Mrs. Walley. "It didn’t take long to recognize that Marian is a truly special place, especially because of the way our students embody small, meaningful gestures of love and joy so effortlessly each day. I look forward to continuing to experience this light and provide some light of my own in my years ahead at Marian."

Though his five years at Marian represent only a small chapter in a remarkable 48-year career, they are years he remembers fondly because of the students and colleagues who made Marian feel like home.

Whether teaching Intro to Filmmaking, Graphic Design, or Art Exploration, Dan Mahoney has spent the past eight years at Marian helping students explore creativity in its many forms.

For 34 years, Sheila Geary has been a cherished presence in Marian's hallways and classrooms, teaching theology, making students laugh, and encouraging young women to see the world through a wider lens.

Twelve members of Marian's Forensics Team traveled to Washington, D.C. over Memorial Day weekend to compete at the 2026 National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament, one of the nation's largest and most competitive speech and performance events.

For many years, Marian students, alumnae, parents, and faculty have partnered with International Samaritan through service immersion trips to Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. This week, many of those participants gathered to reflect on their experiences, celebrate an important milestone, and rally support for the organization's next major project.
