Field Day Puts Class Spirit on Full Display

Firefighters, astronauts, jungle explorers, and surfers took over Marian on Friday for one of the most anticipated days of the school year: Field Day.

The sun was shining, the sidelines were full, and each class arrived ready to make its case for the Field Day title. The Freshmen Firefighters were “Hosing Down the Competition,” the Sophomores in Space were “Blasting Off to Victory,” the Juniors in the Jungle were “Hunting for the Win,” and the Senior Surfers were “Riding the Waves to Victory.”

Field Day puts the classes head-to-head in just about every way imaginable. Students competed in pickleball, soccer, tennis, cornhole, Pictionary, Just Dance, a three-legged race, water balloon toss, and many other games and challenges throughout the day.

But winning Field Day takes more than athletic ability. Classes also earned points for their costumes and T-shirts, parade and song, class cheers, and choreographed dances. Weeks of planning and preparation go into the day, with each grade working to bring its theme to life and earn every possible point.

Parents turned out to watch the action, while alumnae returned to campus to once again experience this much-loved tradition. This year’s panel of alumnae judges ranged from the Class of 1970 to the Class of 2021: Sharon McMurray ’70, Mary Beth Rich MacGuidwin ’76, Laura Sullivan Lilley ’87, Jennifer Latimer Ludwig ’96, Megan Kerby Canty ’00, and Marilyn Kowalewski ’21.

When the scores were tallied, the Senior Surfers rode their wave all the way to first place. The Juniors in the Jungle finished second, Sophomores in Space took third, and the Freshmen Firefighters finished fourth.

The competition may be fierce, but that’s part of the fun. Field Day is loud, colorful, creative, competitive, and unmistakably Marian. There really is nothing quite like it.
