Mustangs Take the Field for 45th Senior Football Matchup

For Marian students, Senior Football is a tradition they look forward to from the day they first walk through the doors as freshmen.

On Saturday, Marian and Regina took the field at Lawrence Tech for the 45th matchup between the two schools. The Mustangs, led by Head Coach Ken Fenton, fell 16-8 after a hard-fought game. Marian’s Sophia Smith provided an exciting finish, scoring a touchdown in the final seconds and catching the two-point conversion.

But the story of Senior Football begins long before game day. For eight weeks, Marian seniors put in hours of practice and preparation, building a team and strengthening friendships along the way. By game day, that spirit extends well beyond the players on the field.

Senior Football is a seniors-only tradition, but it is embraced by the entire Marian community. Students pack the stands, families turn out in force, and alumnae return year after year, many bringing their own children and sharing a tradition they once experienced themselves.

The excitement leading up to Saturday’s game filled the school throughout the week, culminating in Friday’s all-school pep rally celebrating the senior team.

Win or lose, Senior Football has never been defined by the final score. It is the weeks of preparation, the camaraderie among classmates, the energy throughout the school, and the generations of Mustangs who return to be part of it again. Forty-five matchups later, it remains one of Marian’s most anticipated traditions.

Well done, Mustangs!
