HSPT
Marian requires all incoming 9th grade applicants to submit a score from the High School Placement Test (HSPT) taken during 8th grade. It is highly recommended that students test in November or December.
The HSPT is a national standardized test referenced for both admission and placement consideration. This test is required by many Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The HSPT is one of several factors considered for admission, alongside a student’s standardized test scores from grades 6-8, academic performance, and the quality of their application. It also helps determine 9th-grade course placement (standard or honors) in core subjects like English, math, modern language, science, and social studies. Students take the HSPT at the start of 8th grade, and it can only be taken once. While no preparation is required, some students may feel more confident with practice. Prep courses and materials are available through some Catholic schools, tutoring centers, or resources like Peterson’s (https://www.petersons.com/). Brother Rice High School offers a prep course that is open to female students, register here. Additionally, students not initially placed in honors classes can requalify near the end of their freshman year.
The Archdiocese of Detroit will administer the HSPT at area high schools on several dates. Students are encouraged to preregister online.
