Position Summary:
The Varsity Field Hockey Assistant Coach at Marian High School plays an integral role in the development and success of the varsity field hockey program. This position requires a dedicated coach who can help foster a competitive, faith-driven, and positive environment for the student-athletes. The assistant coach works alongside the Head Coach to implement practice strategies, game tactics, and overall team development, while emphasizing the importance of teamwork, discipline, and the core values of the Catholic faith.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in Coaching: Support the Head Coach in all aspects of coaching the Varsity Field Hockey team, including planning and conducting practices, implementing drills, and ensuring the development of individual players' skills and team strategies.
- Game Day Support: Provide hands-on support during games by helping with warm-ups, in-game coaching, and adjustments to strategy based on game situations. Offer feedback and motivate players during breaks.
- Player Development: Assist in the development of athletes’ technical skills (e.g., stick handling, shooting, passing) and tactical understanding of the game (e.g., formations, set plays, defensive strategies).
- Team Leadership: Serve as a mentor and positive role model, emphasizing the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect both on and off the field. Foster an inclusive and empowering environment for all athletes.
- Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with players, parents, and other coaching staff. Help manage team schedules, practices, and events, ensuring smooth and effective coordination.
- Catholic Values: Reinforce the school’s Catholic values of integrity, faith, and service. Help integrate the school’s mission into the team’s goals and culture.
- Assisting with Team Logistics: Help manage team equipment, uniforms, and travel logistics for away games. Assist with setting up and breaking down for practices and games.
- Scouting and Recruitment: Assist the Head Coach with scouting opposing teams and identifying potential recruitment opportunities to help maintain and build a competitive program.
- Safety and Well-being: Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all players during practices and games, and assist in managing player injuries. Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in coaching field hockey, either at the high school or collegiate level (preferred).
- Strong understanding of field hockey fundamentals, strategies, and tactics.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire young athletes, encouraging both individual and team growth.
- Alignment with the Catholic faith and mission of Marian High School, with a commitment to fostering a respectful and supportive environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach and other staff members.
- Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents, and the broader Marian High School community.
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- Must pass a background check and complete any required child safety training.
Additional Information:
- This position requires a time commitment for daily practices, games, and occasional weekend events, including overnight travel for tournaments.
- This is a seasonal position, typically lasting from August to November, with possible extension depending on team success (e.g., playoffs).
- Background check and child safety training required in accordance with school policies.
