While voters from two Bloomfield Township precincts were voting in the front of the building on Election Day, Marian High School faculty and administrators were participating in a full-day workshop presented by Laura Arndt, a consultant from McREL International, in the school’s library media center.
As part of Marian’s ongoing professional development in current teaching and learning research, Ms. Arndt spoke about inquiry based learning. The interactive workshop addressed teaching strategies that promote reasoning and evidence-based problem solving across all content areas. Inquiry was modeled as participants worked with their colleagues to analyze text, synthesize data, and participate in learning scenarios that promote reasoning and the use of evidence to make decisions.
The workshop helped Marian teachers craft higher-order content questions that are both thought-provoking and relevant to secondary level content. It also helped teachers craft rubrics that place greater emphasis on evidence-based thinking, argumentation, and decision making. These tools will support teachers as they prepare Marian students for standardized testing.
Ms. Arndt, nationally renowned for her work in STEM/GreenSTEM program development, customized and facilitated the workshop in effective classroom instruction for the Marian teachers. She encouraged their continued use of higher order thinking and problem solving strategies to engage students in their classes.
