Marian Students Call their Community into Action

Marian students spearhead efforts to help those in need.
Members of Marian’s Model United Nations (MUN) club partnered with the Ukrainian American Crisis Response Committee (UACRC) to collect donations for the people of Ukraine. The Marian community showed their compassion by donating multiple car loads of relief items including first aid kits, backpacks, solar cell phone chargers, sleeping bags, hygiene products, toiletries, clothing, towels, batteries, and flashlights. The items were delivered to a local warehouse where they will be sorted and shipped to Poland through the Committee and given to those in need. The idea for the collection by MUN came from sophomore Nini Sobol, whose maternal family lives in Ukraine. They identified the UACRC, a grassroots organization formed to respond to the escalating crisis facing Ukraine, to help ensure the delivery of the items to relief efforts on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

In addition, Marian’s National Honor Society held a drive to collect menstrual hygiene products and kits for women in need.  They collected 1,900 tampons and pads that will also be donated to both the UACRC, and I Support the Girls, an organization that collects and distributes essential items, including bras, underwear, and menstrual hygiene products, allowing women experiencing homelessness, impoverishment, or distress to stand tall with dignity.

Also, just before the start of the summer swim season, sophomore Axelle Ballarin spearheaded a collection for gently used swimsuits, goggles, and swim caps for Detroit Swims, an organization that teaches underprivileged children how to swim. Thanks to those efforts, more kids in the city of Detroit and surrounding areas, will have the tools to learn to swim in just a matter of weeks and be confident in and around the water.
