Honoring Black History Month

Marian’s Black Student Union (BSU), along with the office of School Culture, coordinated a speaker, activities and visuals throughout the school to highlight and honor the contributions of the Black community during Black History Month.  Highlights included:
  • Guest speaker, Jeanine Gant, the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Lead for Emerging World, provided a student-focused presentation on social and emotional learning competencies, self and social awareness. Students participated in guided small and large group discussions, activities and self-reflection. Ms. Gant prepared and facilitated sessions designed to help Marian students identify and strengthen their self and social awareness skills and build positive & healthy relationships guided by important values, including empathy, understanding and respect.
  • Short films and interviews with key figures in Black history, including Ruby Bridges and the Little Rock Nine
  • Artwork filled with colors symbolic of the history of Black culture and images and stories of trailblazers and difference-makers that made positive impacts in history.
  • BSU members were featured on social media to share their inspiration and advice on being a student at Marian.

The BSU, was officially formed during the “2021/2022” school year with the goal of celebrating Black culture, appreciating African American history, and providing a safe place for Marian’s Black students throughout the year. In addition, the club was created to help students foster growth through community service and outreach and offer the Marian community opportunities for cultural and intellectual enrichment. BSU also aims to promote cultural solidarity within and beyond Marian High School. BSU is open to anyone that would like to join.  Being part of the BSU has allowed students at Marian to feel connected, acknowledged, and empowered as Black students and as young women of Marian.
