Marian Works with Detroit Elementary Students

Twenty seven members from Marian High School’s Spanish Honor Society (SHS) traveled to Neinas Elementary School in southwest Detroit to work with third grade students and celebrate the holidays. The Marian students, accompanied by Mrs. Stacey Cushman, SHS moderator, were welcomed by the 33 students of Mrs. Amy Lazarowicz.
While at Neinas, the Marian students read classic Christmas tales in Spanish to the young students, wrote and colored Christmas books, and decorated cookies together. As the students worked together, Marian learned that many of the Neinas students speak Spanish as their first or second language at home.  Marian students, most who commute to school each morning, were also surprised to hear that most of the Neinas students walk to and from school in all seasons and weather.

One of the highlights of the visit was when the third graders broke into dance.  From “JuJu of the Beat” to the “Whip and Nae Nae,” the third graders and the high schoolers had fun together.  When the impromptu dance battles ended, it was time to decorate cookies, and the young students’ faces lit up.

While eating their cookies, many students chatted about friends, family, and home. One student mentioned the fact that his family of five lives in a basement.  This conversation reminded Marian students how blessed and lucky they are to attend Marian and to live in relative luxury.
“This visit strengthened our perspective what life looks like only miles and minutes away from us,” Junior Katie Mertz, a SHS officer, said. “We are beyond grateful for this blessed experience, meeting new kids, and learning more about the community around us.”

The party is part of an ongoing collaboration between Marian and Neinas.  After the holidays, the Spanish Honor Society will sponsor a fundraiser for the Detroit school.  Marian juniors will help with the annual Engineering Fair at Neinas during their Junior Service Day in April.
