Marian High School Mourns Loss of Beloved Athletic Director
David Feldman, husband, father, brother, athletic director, coach and friend lost his battle with Covid-19 on January 14, 2021. He will be remembered at Marian for his love of God and his family, his quick wit, and his care for and continuous encouragement to the Marian athletes to “Be awesome”.
Dave became Athletic Director for the Marian Mustangs in July 2004, just after the soccer team had won back to back state championships. He made it his mission to make every team competitive, and the stats don’t lie. The Mustangs won 24 state championships and countless catholic league, district, and regional championships during his tenure. During the 2009-2010 school year, Marian captured four state championships. If there was a sport an athlete wanted to play, Dave did his best to make it happen, adding dance, figure skating, hockey, an equestrian team, competitive bowling, cheer and the latest, snowboarding team. He loved to watch the Mustangs compete and was their biggest fan.
Dave was at the helm this fall as games were rescheduled, practices moved outside, masks required, testing every other day, and the fall 2020 season put on hold. He continued to encourage the Marian athletes as they waited to finish their season. The volleyball and swim and dive teams were ready and waiting to go to the championships. Though Dave did not make it to Battle Creek to see the volleyball team capture the championship crown or the pool deck to see the swim and dive team fight for the podium, taking third overall, his mantra “Be Awesome” was with each athlete as they competed. “Play 4 Feldman” adorned the shoes of the volleyball players and his daughter Jacqui Feldman ’19, a freshman volleyball coach, accepted the championship trophy in his place.
Dave was remembered at Marian by students and faculty in a prayer service where student athletes shared remembrances, a special rosary said in his honor, a Book of Condolence signed by many for the Feldman family, and yellow ribbons on many of the trees in front of the school.
As a lasting tribute to Dave, Marian is dedicating a piece of our athletic campus in memory of the man who made an indelible mark on the hearts of the many lives he impacted during his 16+ years at Marian – Feldman Fields. To honor his vibrant spirit and unfailing commitment to our students and the mission of our school, we will be placing signage and a special dedication at the entrance to the back field. Marian Athletics and our athletic fields held a very special place in Dave’s heart.
May God rest Dave’s soul and may his spirit live on in all who were privileged to know him.
