Congratulations to Marian’s Madison Kainaya ’24, of Troy, on her third-place finish at the sixth annual “Live It. Show It. Share It.” Scholarship essay contest presented by the Alliance Catholic Foundation which awards scholarships to 10 Catholic school students attending eligible Catholic High School League schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Students from eighth through 11th grade were asked to submit an essay on “If you were able to hang out with any saint in history, who would you pick and why? What is the first question you would ask them, and how do you think they would respond?”
Inspired by her mother Rudaina’s ability to face adversity with “a smile on her face and with love and gratitude,” Madison selected St. Jude, the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes.
"I want to be able to follow in my mom's footsteps in doing right and helping others,” said Madison. “This opportunity allows me to really think about our actions and be more in tune with the challenges others face. This helps me to be more empathic and hopefully be able to pay this forward when I grow up.”
Rudaina, an educator, who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor, had a vision of Saint Jude who spoke to her during her preoperative preparation which took place on Good Friday. It was after that moment her mother spoke to the doctors and nurses about what she had just experienced. After re-examining her just prior to surgery, they found the tumor was gone.
Following the cancer scare, Madison’s mother was presented with other health challenges that made Madison ask the question to Saint Jude as to why her family continues to be tested with these challenges.
“St. Jude would say to keep your faith, pray, have gratitude, and more importantly to testify to the word of God,” said Madison upon reflecting on how she believes St. Jude would answer her question.
Madison also turned to the story of Saint Bridget who was “directed in a vision to pray with deep faith and confidence to Saint Jude.” Saint Bridget said he is the patron of the impossible because the Lord identified him as a saint ready and willing to assist those who go through trials.
