Marian High School’s Sarah Gundlach ’24, from West Bloomfield, was selected by her teachers to represent the school for the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminars this spring.
Each year, 10,000 high school sophomores from more than 2,000 high schools across the country develop their leadership skills and learn how to apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and the community at one of 70 HOBY State Leadership Seminars. Student “Ambassadors” from across their state participate in State or Virtual Leadership Seminars between April and June each year, building a network of positive community change-makers and a wider network of HOBY Alumni. After each seminar, HOBY alumni are challenged to complete 100 hours of community service within the next year as a way to put their passion and newly built leadership skills into action.
Sarah has been a volunteer for her church youth group. In addition, she sorted and packed food at the Gleaners Community Food Bank. She has plans to volunteer at the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital.
“I am excited and very honored to represent Marian at the HOBY leadership development program that will be held at Albion College,” said Sarah. “I am looking forward to learning how to expand the opportunities for Marian students to serve our local community.”
Sarah is active in school as a member of the Forensics Speech Team, Forensics Science Team, Marian Medical Club, and Rock-Climbing Club. In addition, she competes as a member of Marian’s cross country, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track teams.
Advanced Placement Government Seniors and We the People State Showcase students Lena McKenney, Hannah Kaczmarek, Katie Freese, and Jen Suan traveled to the State Capitol on March 14th to represent Marian in celebrating Michigan’s official inaugural “Civic Learning Week 2024.”
