MAC Inducts 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Four Champion Coaches Among the Inductees
Late Athletic Director Honored
The Marian Athletic Club (MAC) inducted five new members into the Marian Hall of Fame on May 1 in front of 250 student-athletes past and present, parents of present and alumnae athletes, coaches and supporters of Marian and its athletic program.  This year’s class included retiring coaches who amassed a combined 47 Catholic High School League (CHSL) titles, and 22 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) championships and have elevated Marian’s profile as a powerhouse in athletics. The inductees, who participated in a panel conversation emceed by FOX 2 sports reporter, Jennifer Hammond, are Barry Brodsky (varsity soccer), Mary Cicerone (varsity basketball), Jay Louis-Prescott (field hockey, junior varsity soccer), Bill Thompson (swimming and diving), and Marian’s late athletic director, David Feldman

This year’s class of inductees was the first in 29 years. The MAC re-established the Hall of Fame in 2022, to honor the rich history and tradition of Marian Mustangs athletics, its student-athletes and coaches. And more important, to preserve the memories created, relationships forged, and stories shared.

In his 20 years at Marian, Brodsky established one of Michigan’s most successful soccer programs. His teams captured 17 CHSL championships and appeared in 12 MHSAA finals, winning nine including the last four consecutive titles before retiring following the 2021 season. Brodsky is the sixth-winningest coach in MHSAA history with 349 victories. The nine titles are third most in state history and the four consecutive titles from 2017-2021 are tied for second most in the Michigan history books.

Over her 39-year career, Cicerone led the Mustangs to 19 Central Division titles, 20 CHSL titles, 12 MHSAA Final Fours, a state runner-up finish in 1997 and six state championships which is tied for second most in state history. Cicerone’s 707 victories place her third among all girls basketball coaches and fifth among all boys or girls basketball coaches combined. Cicerone’s teams averaged 18 wins per year under her leadership.  Her storied career will forever be encapsulated by accolades and honors, including 2017 Hall of Fame inductee, Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan; five-time Coach of the Year, MHSAA (1988, 1992, 1996, 1998); 2014 Coach of the Year MHSAA; 2009 Person of the Year and 1998 Hall of Fame inductee, CHSL.

Louis-Prescott has served Marian for 17 years as both a campus minister and as a junior varsity coach in one of the most successful soccer programs in state history. He also had a major influence over the Marian field hockey program where he began as an assistant coach in 2007 before becoming head coach in 2012. A CHSL Hall of Famer, he led the Mustangs field hockey program to six CHSL titles in seven seasons at the helm before retiring after the 2019 campaign. In addition, his 2018 and 2019 teams both reached the state field hockey Final Four.

Thompson built the Marian swim and dive program into one of the state’s most competitive, often competing in higher than required classifications. His teams surpassed expectations as a result of his renown attention to detail in technical instruction. Every current swimming individual event school record at Marian has been earned under Thompson’s leadership, including four current CHSL records. The Mustangs were state runners-up four times and captured MHSAA Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2014 under his tutelage. Thompson has coached dozens of league champions, state champions and all-Americans.

On January 14, 2021, Marian lost athletic director David Feldman. In his 14-year tenure at Marian, his teams captured 24 state championships and 61 Catholic League titles. He was responsible for hiring, mentoring and inspiring countless coaches and student-athletes across 18 sports. He was active as a MHSAA and MIAAA committee member, but more than anything Feldman set a standard for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in relationships exemplified by his “Be Awesome” mantra.

Since Marian’s last induction in 1993, the Mustangs have captured 105 CHSL titles, 96 Regional trophies, 23 Team State runner-up finishes and 31 team state championships. Individual athletic accomplishments include 591 First-Team All-State awards over that same 29-year span.
