  • Matching Gifts

Many companies set aside philanthropic dollars, allowing employees and often spouses, widows, retirees, and directors of the company to make a contribution, which then is matched with a corporate gift. Matching gifts are a vitally important source of funds for schools like Marian.

How to Make a Matching Gift:
Matching levels and procedures vary between companies; specific information can be obtained from your company’s human resource office.  Once you make your gift to Marian, you may be able to apply for a matching gift online through your company’s website or obtain a matching gift form to mail to Marian. Our Office for Advancement will handle the processing of your matching gift once your gift is received.

If you are not sure whether your employer matches contributions to Marian, please contact your human resource department, check your company’s website, or call the Marian Office for Advancement at (248) 644-1946.  We will be glad to look into it for you!

  • Estate Gifts and The 1959 Society

Estate gifts can be an alternative and/or an addition to immediate gifts; these gifts ensure the future of Catholic education at Marian by building our Endowment Fund. Bequests by will or trust are the most common estate gifts. While there is no immediate tax advantage, such a gift to Marian can help reduce your estate taxes and offers you flexibility to make changes during your lifetime.

We offer the following bequest language for your consideration:

“I, ___________ (name), hereby bequeath to Marian High School, 7225 Lahser Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301, (__% of my estate) or (__% of the remainder of my estate) or ($_______) to be used for its general purposes.”

Marian is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Our tax ID is 38-1650600. (Print Bequest Language pdf to take your estate planner.)

The above alternatives are examples of an unrestricted bequest, meaning that in the event of your death, the assets can be used by Marian as needed at the time. According to Board policy, a minimum of 10 percent of unrestricted bequests will go into a Marian endowment fund.

When you notify Marian of your estate plan, you become a member of The 1959 Society. Named for the year the school was founded, The 1959 Society is a group of alumnae and friends whose foresight and generosity will ensure that Marian’s mission continues. Please complete and send the Marian Letter of Intent to the Office of Advancement.

We invite you to consider becoming a member of The 1959 Society by including Marian in your estate plan.  Of course, we recommend that you talk with your attorney or tax consultant before you make any decision in this matter.
  • Endowed Scholarships

All gifts for endowed scholarships are invested permanently; only earnings from the gifts are used for scholarship awards.

    Individually Named Scholarships
For a gift of at least $50,000, Marian will establish an individually named scholarship which allows the initiator to participate in establishing the scholarship’s name, the award criteria, and the award selection process.

    General Scholarships
For a gift of at least $10,000, Marian will establish a general scholarship (typically for incoming freshmen) named according to the donor’s wishes.

For information on establishing a new Marian scholarship or making a gift to the Scholarship Fund, contact the Advancement office at (248) 644-1946 or email Advancement@marian-hs.org .
  • Gifts of Securities

Gifts of securities, which can be a current or an estate gift, often confer significant tax benefits on the donor.  For example, contributions of appreciated securities held for over a year are generally deductible at market value, regardless of what the donor paid for the securities.  In addition, capital gains tax may be avoided through such a gift.  The gift valuation date for securities given to Marian is the date they are deposited to our account.

When making a gift of securities to Marian, please contact Sally Bzdok '71 in the Office for Advancement at (248) 644-1946 for account information.

  • Life Insurance

Two different ways to help Marian through a life insurance policy are possible; each offers an attractive method for making a substantial donation to the school.

The first method is to make a lifetime gift of an insurance policy to the school, which generates a charitable tax deduction for the year in which it is given if Marian is named owner and beneficiary of the policy.  The deduction is roughly equal to the policy’s cash surrender value.  Subsequent premium payments are also deductible.

The second method is simply to name the school as beneficiary of a new or existing policy.  The school can be the lone beneficiary or one of several named in the policy.
  • Retirement Assets

Gifts of retirement benefits can provide significant tax savings. You may simply name Marian High School, 7225 Lahser Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301 as a beneficiary on your 401K, SEP-IRA, or similar retirement assets.
  • Real Estate

Gifts of real estate can be transferred to Marian by deed or through estate plan. They can be an outright gift, a gift in your will or trust, or a remainder interest gift.

When you make an outright gift of real estate you have owned longer than one year, you may obtain a federal income tax charitable deduction equal to the property’s full fair market value and eliminate capital gains tax on its appreciation.

When you make a gift in your will or trust, your personal representative or trustee can sell the real estate and donate the proceeds to Marian.

A gift by deed with retained life estate provides a charitable contribution income tax deduction you’re your lifetime with the ability to continue to enjoy your property for the rest of your life.

Real estate and other property interests, real and personal, not readily negotiable and valued in excess of $25,000 must be reviewed, and acceptance must be approved by the Marian Board of Directors.
  • In-kind Gifts

Over the years, many individuals have donated sculptures, paintings, books, equipment, and other types of personal property to Marian.  Businesses have also given gifts of materials and services to the school.  These in-kind donations are an important source of gifting that enable the school to support student programs, make capital improvements, and direct operating funds to critical areas. In-kind gifts are tax-deductible to the extent of IRS regulations.

If you wish to make an in-kind gift, please contact the  Advancement office at (248) 644-1946 or Advancement@marian-hs.org.
