Christian outreach, a hallmark of Marian education, takes place all year long at the high school. Much of the outreach is student-initiated and coordinated by Project Care, a student organization.
Fall began with a book collection initiated by Senior Lauren Wenzel and her sister, Sophomore Lilly Wenzel. With the help of other students, some 500 books, including classroom sets of textbooks and library books, were collected for Hamtramck High School. In October, seniors made fleece blankets for Fleece and Thank You, an organization supported by a young Marian alumna. Additionally, 20 students stayed after school to pack snacks for PB&J Outreach Ministries for distribution at homeless shelters.
In exchange for a non-uniform dress pass, students made monetary contributions to the Pink Fund, supporting October’s Breast Cancer Month awareness, and to SSIHM ministries on Founders’ Day. Computer classes collected six large boxes of cereal, peanut butter, and soup for the Ladies of Charity Food Panty.
Over 120 pounds of extra Halloween candy was donated to Sr. Peggy Devaney, IHM and the Oakland County Jail Ministry Office. Students, faculty, and staff also donated dozens of new and clean used coats for the 30th annual Coats for the Cold, sponsored by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Gifts were presented at Marian’s Thanksgiving liturgy, presided by Archbishop Allen Vigneron and celebrated just before the holiday. Reusable water bottles were given to the Ladies of Charity, and stuffed animals were gathered for the Children’s Holiday Wish program sponsored by the Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club. Angels’ Place, a program for developmentally disabled adults, received food items and paper projects.
Marian’s Advent outreach begins in December as students, faculty, and staff collect food for Detroit’s food pantries at Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Christine churches. School supplies and paper products are collected for Holy Redeemer Elementary School, and cleaning supplies are donated to Freedom House.
