Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. During the last week of February, Marian's Diversity Matters Club dedicated Tuesday’s Morning Prayer to the lives and contributions of all African Americans. On Wednesday, a club member highlighted the life of Langston Hughes and recited his poem “Dream Variations” during announcements, and in homeroom a survey on Race Relations was disseminated to the student body.
During Thursday’s homeroom, a video was shown of Marian Sophomore Kamryn Winchester giving her award-winning speech “How to Overcome Our Biases? Walk Boldly Toward Them” by Vernā Myers. Kamryn has won numerous awards for her presentations of this piece; first place overall in the first two Detroit Catholic Forensics League tournaments and tied for first place overall in the February 27 competition.
Lastly, Friday morning meditation came from instrumental African reflection music. Additionally, Black History quotes and a special display were featured in Marian’s main hallway.
As a community, Marian is committed to pray and act to end all forms of hatred and violence.
Advanced Placement Government Seniors and We the People State Showcase students Lena McKenney, Hannah Kaczmarek, Katie Freese, and Jen Suan traveled to the State Capitol on March 14th to represent Marian in celebrating Michigan’s official inaugural “Civic Learning Week 2024.”
