Round off the Mustangs Solid Athletics Program Highlights for the 2021-22 School Year
Marian High School athletics program capped off a successful 2021-2022 athletic campaign on the team, individual, and coaching levels.  The Mustangs brought home the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) title in volleyball and reached the finals in soccer, as well as swim and dive. Additionally, Marian won the Catholic High School League (CHSL) championships in volleyball, basketball, skiing, pompon, soccer, and lacrosse.

“It was an incredible year,” said first-year Marian Athletic Director Mike Watson. “We can all be proud of the success on the fields, courts, and pool, but what is most outstanding to me is that each and every one of our teams earned a grade point average above 3.8. Trophies are terrific, but we’re here to prepare our girls for college in body, mind, and spirit and I think we’re on the right track.”

Individual awards recognizing academics, athletic performance, and coaching were collected, and milestones were reached.  Several individual athletic awards were earned by Marian student-athletes including two state championships, five All-Americans, 13 state and national awards, five CHSL titles, 27 All-State 1st Team selections, along with nine other All-State selections in various categories. Marian had 56 student-athletes named All-League/Division, 44 All-Catholic, and three winners for CHSL special awards.  The CHSL also inducted a new member, Maria Kaschalk ’17, into their Hall of Fame in 2022.

Former varsity basketball head coach, Mary Cicerone, won her 700th victory on January 28, retiring at the season’s end with 707 total victories and cementing her legacy as the winningest female basketball coach in Michigan history. In addition, varsity volleyball head coach, Maysa Cook, whose Mustangs team earned a #2 national ranking, was named the 2021-22 National High School Coach of the Year by Volleyball Magazine, and the United States Marine Corp/American Volleyball Coaches Association Girls High School National Coach of the Year.

Mustangs athletics, comprised of 33 teams including varsity, junior varsity, freshman, and unified teams, fielded 277 student-athletes across basketball, bowling, cross country, equestrian, field hockey, figure skating, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse sailing, skiing, soccer, softball, track and field, tennis, volleyball.
